Define Your Job Search Space
An organized space is critical to an effective job search. Even if the space is nothing more than the end of your dining room table, your own space is necessary to help you stay focused, confident and in control of your job search. Most important, the space must be exclusively yours and off limits to everyone else to ensure that information is not lost and that it is available for when you need it. Make sure you have a nearby computer, printer and internet access or can easily set up a computer with internet access in this space. You will need to regularly conduct research, apply for jobs and follow up on e-mails with your network and employers.
Stock your area with notebooks, pens, pencils and useful reference materials. Also have good quality résumé paper, envelopes and stamps handy as some employers still want mailed résumés (or appreciate the follow up to an online application.) Buy a sectioned folder to file copies of the job postings, your cover letters and résumé for easy reference when an employer calls you for a telephone screening or to schedule an interview. Some people prefer their file to be numbered 1-31 and also use it as a “tickle” file in which each date corresponds with the day in the month in which they apply for a job or need to complete a task. More commonly though, the files are set up with alphabetical tabs. Jobseekers find it easier to locate a résumé by the employer company name when in a hurry. Have access to a telephone for calls. If you opt to use a cell phone, make sure reception is clear and the area is not prone to dropping your signal.
Eliminate distractions. Stay away from televisions, windows, playrooms, pet areas or anything else that will distract you from being productive or wreck your train of thought during interviews or conversations.
Discuss with your family or roommates the importance of respecting this area and your space. If at all possible, select a location that has a door so you can close the room off when in use and not in use to discourage curious children or others who know they can quickly grab paper or something else they might need. Your success will also be their success.
